Mode of Study

Part-time Evening

The M.Sc. in Clinical Electrophysiology (Neurophysiology) provides advanced training in the recording, analysis and clinical interpretation of electrophysiological signals such as electroencephalography, electromyography, electroneurography, electrocardiography and evoked potentials. You will gain practical experience with specialised equipment used to record and stimulate neural activity, including configuring and troubleshooting systems in clinical settings. A central component of the programme is intra-operative neuromonitoring, where you will learn to support surgical teams by monitoring neural function during operations and providing real-time feedback. The course also develops your ability to analyse physiological data using advanced signal processing techniques, including artefact detection and removal. Emphasis is placed on producing clear clinical reports and communicating effectively with healthcare professionals. Combining strong clinical training with analytical skills, this programme prepares you for careers in clinical neurophysiology, intra-operative neuromonitoring, or roles in research and industry, particularly in areas related to medical devices and biomedical signal analysis.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Master of Science in Clinical Electrophysiology (Neurophysiology) - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Centre for Biomedical Cybernetics

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the anatomy and physiology of the central and peripheral nervous system;
  • Describe, explain and characterize the origin and characteristics of various electrophysiological signals such as the electroencephalogram, electromyogram, electroneurogram, electrocardiogram, and evoked potentials;
  • Identify, describe and choose the optimal configuration characteristics of the acquisition devices and equipment, such as amplifiers;
  • Explain the nature and characteristics of the various stimulation techniques to stimulate various nerves, such as the auditory nerve and optic nerve;
  • Identify, choose and implement methods for processing the electrophysiological signals;
  • Identify the neural signals relevant to the specialised surgery and the electrical environment of the operating theatre; explain how the latter affect the reliability of the recorded signals and the relation of the nature of the signal to matters that will require the electrophysiologist to make a diagnostic decision and advise the surgical team in a timely manner.

Non EU Applicants:

Total Tuition Fees: Eur 13,400
Yr 1: Eur 6,700 - Yr 2: Eur 6,700 - Yr 3: NIL

You are viewing the fees for non EU nationals. Switch to EU nationals if you are a national of any country from within the EU/EEA.

As a graduate holding a Master of Science in Clinical Electrophysiology (Neurophysiology), you will be well prepared for a career in clinical neurophysiology and intra-operative neuromonitoring, both locally and internationally (provided that the necessary professional requirements are met). Your training will equip you to play a critical role in patient care through the acquisition and analysis of electrophysiological data.

In addition to clinical practice, you may also pursue careers in research or in industry, particularly in areas related to medical devices and the development of signal analysis software. These roles offer opportunities to contribute to innovation and advancements in healthcare technology and neurodiagnostic tools.
